Consumption. mm..mm...good

Learning about how other people consume telenovelas is interesting. It was interesting to hear Ruxi speak of her personal experiences with telenovelas. She's a very dutiful telenovela viewer who goes to great extent to get access to her beloved telenovelas. The way people consumed telenovelas was so interesting to me that I actually interviewed three of my Hispanic friends and asked them about their perosnal experiences/perspectives about telenovelas. These 3 Hispanic female college students who have varying telenovela viewing habits and who have came to the States at different stages in their life. I believe there is some sort of correlation between the amount of time they spent in the States to their telenovela viewing habits. One girl who was born and raised here never watches telenovelas. The other girl who grew up in South America watches telenovelas dutifully when she was there and still watches them to this day. Another girl who has spent half of her life in South America and the other half of her life in the States watches them on occassion. This is what I am writing about for my final paper. It's interesting stuff!

  1. I think you bring up an interesting point when you say that there is a correlation between how long people live in the United States and their telenovela viewing habits.
Then again, I think about myself and seem to slightly disagree. I think it is all a matter of how you became exposed to them and how often you are exposed to them. I have lived in the United States my whole life and I would say that once I was introduced to telenovelas I became entranced with all aspects of them, yet I have never lived in a Latin American culture. Many of the people in the United States are not as privileged to take a class like this one, therefore they might not ever know or experience a real telenovela. However, since we are exposed to them 3 days a week, they are constantly on our minds so I feel like we will always have a special interest for them.
This is similar to Ruxi’s experience with telenovelas. Because she had a strong Latin American base and she was introduced to them at a young age, she is now addicted and an avid watcher. However, even if she lived in the United States and wasn’t introduced to them until a later age like many of us, I think she would still view them just as often as she does.
All of this shows that telenovelas are universal, no matter where you are from or where you live. What matters is how you are introduced to them, because many people will find that once you get going, you just can’t stop.

  2. Ugggghhh, I'm so upset that I had to miss this class!!! I literally just flew back from France a few hours ago bc of flight delays! On the topic of consumption, while I was in France I spent a lot of my time with a Mexican lady and a few girls from Bulgaria and I mentioned this class to them! I'll write more about this in my new blog entry on Friday, but their reactions about telenovelas were super interesting especially from the Mexican lady because she's from an older generation (65 yrs old!).
