I have always had one single complaint with most of my favorite telenovelas: the music.
For me this is where American dramas beat out my beloved novelas. For example, Grey's Anatomy has new music every week, sometimes it's an artist I've heard of and other times it's a tune that has me running to Google to try to figure out who it is by. Telenovelas on the other hand like to keep to the same stash of music for the entire novela. So by episode 93 I feel like screaming every time I hear the soft piano intro of the main character's love theme.
Most of the time my complaint isn't the music itself (unless we're talking about Pasion de Gavilanes and then yes, oh yes my complaint is about that music). As we saw in class many novelas comision their own specific music that will fit well with their theme. It's just how predictable it becomes after awhile.
Has this been the case for anyone else?

I am torn! Because I have only watched one and a half telenovelas (almost done with Corazon Salvaje) I love the same old-same old music. It feels to me like I know what the next scene will be like becuase of the music; It foreshadows.
ReplyDeleteWhen I watched Lola...Erase una vez, I really enjoyed Lola's music. The music envoked a feeling in me to feel as Lola feels.
One reason why we are annoyed with the repeated music may be that we are so used to shows like Grey's Anatomy with new artist's music. Sometimes I wish music in telenovelas would be varied. At the same time I like to know when Juan del Diablo is about to say something crazy!
I am a fan of mixing the music up. To me characters should be complex. I don't think the same song for all the different romantic scenes should be the same. Romantic moments take on different tones, the music shouldn't be the same each time.
ReplyDeleteCorrect me if I'm wrong, but I feel like in most American TV shows there's only music in the intros, when there's a really thoughtful moment, or at the end. Personally, I like this mix up because it doesn't give away the stories/scenes. For the telenovela that I watched, there was always repetitive music when something dramatic happened and when I first watched it I found it really distracting and kind of ruining the moment for me! I wanted there to be more of an element of surprise instead of the music giving me a clue of what was to come next.
ReplyDeleteIn my Grey's experiences, I too, have appreciated the music more than in the telenovela I've studied. However, I do believe that although there is different artists from episode to episode the artists stay in the same genre.
ReplyDeleteSo I feel that just like telenovelas are predictable with their music bits, you can predict the genre of Grey's music. You can count on different words and a different voice, but still the same great feeling from Grey's music.
I was also really annoyed with the music in my telenovela because it was abridged so it was like 2 hours of the same few cords of music for tension or at a moment of drama. In an abridged telenovela evey moment is dramatic! So the same few musical notes on a key board were always playing. I can hear them in my head now, ahhh! But oh how I do love my Rubí theme song!!
ReplyDeleteWhile it would be nice to have a change of music for some of the things, I think it really works for the viewers. Hearing a certain set of chords for a love scene, or say for someone whose upset/angry, kind of makes you associate with it more. When you hear that music, you know how to feel. I don't think it's a bad thing. That said, the music that had lyrics accompanied with it did get old for me. Some of it was used in appropriate times, but also often just as filler music. They sang the same 10 words over and over again. It got on my nerves.
