We love to hate.

I have really enjoyed all of the consumption presentations. I love seeing how passionate we are about our telenovelas, as well as other people around the world. One thing that keeps surprising me every time is the love for all of these evil characters.
First, the reaction to Rubi really surprises me. I know Danielle was also shocked when she kept finding post after post about how awesome Rubi is. Why do people get so attached to these evil characters. In almost all of the presentations since Rubi, a lot of people have mentioned how they were surprised that their antagonists are very popular with the viewing audience. As I write this, I am trying to think of all of the shows I have watched and I always hate the evil characters. They ruin everything! Yes, maybe they add a juicy part to the plot line, but I can't stand them! I would think that in Latin America, they would feel so passionate about the evil character and have such immense hatred for them. Latin America is usually thought of as a region with very passionate people and a lot of emotion.
But on the other hand, I love how these evil characters are hated. When a student from our class announces, "I couldn't believe how many people actually loved how evil the antagonist was!!" it really stands out to me. Maybe those people worldwide just truly love to hate the evil in telenovelas.

  1. People do love to hate! What is there was no antagonist? The story line would be very boring, predictable, and dull. No one really wants to watch an overly perfect telenovela. There's got to be somebody to mess up the situation, someone to stir up conflict, to create contrasts and clashes. In the story building sense, I think perhaps the antagonist is just as important as the protagonist. I cannot imagine if my telenovela was without the evil antagonist and evil mother-in-law. It created the tension, the misunderstandings, the drama, the STORY. The shock factor of everything malicious that they did was humorous and kept people hooked. It's like- GASP, I can'tbelieve they did that; now what are they going to do next?? In short, what I'm saying is that the bad guys are important too!

  2. I completely agree! Every time I saw one of the antagonists on the screen, I could have thrown a brick at them every single time (granted, I did not want to break my tv). Sergio Sendel played one of the antagonists in my telenovela, and he played the protagonist in someone's telenovela who presented this week. Just seeing his face got me angry! I loved finding posts about how people wanted to be mean to the antagonists. I think people bond over the fact that they hate them.

  3. My novela was one of those in which everyone fell in love with the antagonist. I can understnd why though because some of the actresses in Amigas y Rivales I found really annoying. Also, I think that the antagonist just brought so much drama to the novela that without her the polt would seem somewhat borring. There were so many characters in my novela that it was easy to get annoyed by someone. On the message boards people were begging the antagonist to kill off someone.
